Daihatsu 8-DK32 Crankshaft Repair in Oman

When a ship experiences a serious engine problem at sea, the most important factor is time.
RA Power Solutions was recently approached by a Greece-based shipping company facing a severe problem in the crankshaft of a Daihatsu 8-DK32 auxiliary engine while the vessel was operating near Oman.
We understood the urgency and immediately mobilized experienced technicians and portable on-site crankshaft grinding equipment to Duqm Port, Oman. Thanks to the valid seaman books held by all technicians, rapid deployment was possible without logistical delays.

On inspection of the crankshaft, it was observed that crankpin no. 03 bearing was badly damaged and stuck on the crankpin's diameter. With great difficulty, the bearing material was removed from the crankpin diameter.

The following steps were taken to repair the crankshaft of Daihatsu 8-DK32:

i) After the removal of bearing material from the crankpin diameter, a dimensional inspection was conducted to check the taper and ovality. The ovality of more than 1.26 mm was observed

ii) The deep scoring marks, line marks, and localised damage were also observed. on the crankpin nos. 3.

iii) The hardness of the crank pin was checked. In general, the hardness was within the limits, except for a few scattered spots where higher hardness was observed.

iv) The higher hardness was observed to be scattered and located in a non-critical area of the crankpin. It was accepted.

v) No cracks were observed in the magnaflux test.

vi) Deflection was checked and was found to be within limits.

vii) The vessel was at the Duqm port, Oman, for a very limited time; hence, our Technicians worked non-stop and successfully repaired it. The crank pin diameter was reduced from 250 mm to 247.00 mm (3.0 mm undersize compared to the standard diameter).

viii) The vessel had undersized bearings available, which were assembled, and the engine was put back into operation.
